2000 • Road from Palenque to Villa Hermosa, Mexico
The palm oil plantations are destroying the forest. We came across an enormous palm oil plantation after Palenque on the road to Villa Hermosa. Acres and acres of palm oil. Along the road to Palenque as we dropped in elevation and the forest became more tropical, there was greater evidence of deforestation for larger palm oil fields—with heaps of harvested palm nuts waiting to be processed.
