Flamboyant Tree

Personal memory by Tatiana Mercado

1998Puerto Rico

When I used to live in Puerto Rico, in 1998, a hurricane came through the southwest of the island. The hurricane was named George. For a week or so we did not have electricity or water. In front of the house, outside of our garden, there was a beautiful set of tall, old and beautiful flamboyant trees, and they were knocked down by the hurricane, right in front of the house. Thanks to those trees, the sun did not hit the house directly and there was a lot of different birds around all the time. Sadly, these trees are slowly disappearing, they are really beautiful and they strongly represent the island with their red colored leaves and flowers.
