The Dodo

Extinct 1662 CE

Nobody knows the true sound just as nobody knows what the dodo ate or how it lived. First sighted around 1600 on Mauritius the Dodo was extinct less than eighty years later. No complete skeleton has ever been found and the last set of bones was destroyed in a fire at a museum in Oxford, England in 1755.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Protect and restore native forests on Mauritius to safeguard the habitats of the dodo’s closest living relatives.

  • Support conservation programs that help endangered island pigeons like the pink pigeon, which share the dodo’s evolutionary lineage.
