There's been an increase in smog and air pollution in California and its most recent drought is one of the factors of the poor air quality. The drought, very evident through the constant advertisement of using less water, has taken a toll on the atmosphere alongside exhaust from machines. The dwindling amount of water and the high temperatures cause constant forest fires, and the rising of dust particles. This polluted air can be visible from high rises like multiple story buildings and the mountains nearby. I've looked down at the city (Los Angeles) several times from the Griffith Observatory to see a faint misty like haze above it.
