Personal memory by Jessica Resnick-Ault
I remember running into the ocean in Manchester, Mass. at about age 3-- totally disregarding the fact that it was March. The water was searingly cold, but after I was pulled out, the only worry was for my warmth-- there was no concern about pollution in the water. Two and a half decades later, I found myself at Chowpatty beach in Mumbai, India on a reporting trip. It was October and the temperatures were again extreme -- this time, with high heat. In Mumbai, the water wasn't enterable, despite the warm air, because of pollution. As a life-long water lover, I was saddened that some beaches have become unswimable for people and sea creatures alike.
