Lake Michigan Pollution

Personal memory by Lilly Thigpen

As a child who grew up only a few miles from Lake Michigan, it was a frequent summer day location for me. In 2010, I remember going back to the lake for the first time in five years. Things had taken a turn for the worse. Plastics, diapers, trash and dead fish were scattered in the water and on the beach. This lake portion of the lake had been receiving pollution from numerous power plants and failed sewage issues for years. Two years later, the city launched a "clean our beaches" campaign and visible damage can no longer been seen on the shore, before it is quickly picked up. However, that doesn't mean for a second that it's not still there.
