Leatherback Sea Turtles

Personal memory by Nash Singh

1999Guyana

One summer when I was six years old, my grandfather took me to the aquarium in Georgetown to show me the two leatherback sea turtles they had. He joked that they were close family, as the three of them were all about the same age (seventy-two). My grandfather told me that if anything were to happen to him, I was to make sure to keep an eye on his brothers. Later that same year, in November, he passed away. Fifteen years later, I was in Guyana again for a wedding, and I decided to stop by the aquarium to see my other "grandfathers". Unfortunately, both of the turtles had also died. It's a shame to think that I had the opportunity to capitalize on such a memory and by the time I got around to it, it was too late.
