Steelhead Trout

Personal memory by David Barnes

1956Fort Bragg, CA, USA

When I was eight years old, I caught a steelhead trout in Mill Creek that was half my own weight. I had no idea a fish could be so strong. Whenever I would grab its tale, it would flip its tail and throw me into the water. My friend, Greg, and I fought it for over an hour. We could barely carry it home. It provided dinner for nine people. I remember how limp the fish was in Greg's arms as he carried it, compared to how alive and powerful it was while it was alive.
