"Beginning in the 1950s, Peru began large-scale exploitation of anchovies exported as fishmeal….The catch reached 12.4 metric tons in 1970 in spite of biologists' warnings that the maximum sustainable yield was 9.5 million tons…The catch dropped disastrously, averaging 1.2 million tons per year between 1977 and 1987."
