"Nuclear tests during the last 1940s and 1950s led to a worldwide exposure to nuclear substances that can still be measured today. Nuclear fallout was one of the first truly global environmental problems, and concern over radiation became one of the key issues of the early environmental movement. At the same time, the much touted 'peaceful-use' of nuclear power did not fare much better among environmentalists, and concerns over nuclear power plants have been a catalyst of environmentalism in many countries."
