Personal memory by Anna Smukler

I am part of a small community who share a small, unspoiled lake in Muskoka Ontario. Forty years ago in summertime, loons by dozens would congregate noisily on the lake every night, calling to one another and making a glorious ruckus. Now we are lucky to see one or two loons paddle the lake, diving for fish, then surfacing silently and paddling on. Night times are silent, except for the occasional calls of the barred owl in the forest.
