Habitat Loss, New Zealand

1885New Zealand

“New Zealand has lost more of its forest, more rapidly, than any comparable part of the world. The Kauri is a giant among trees; some individuals are 2000 years old, perhaps more. They can reach 180 feet into the sky and measure fifty feet in girth. Their sheer size gives the kauri their great distinction… In the early nineteenth century, the reputation of this magnificent tree brought timber-traders from Sydney… By 1885, half the kauri forest had been plundered and by the end of the century, only a quarter remained.”

Peter Crawford, Nomads of the Wind (London: BBC Books, 1993), 259.
