Gilgamesh Slays Lions

2,800 BCIraq

"That night Gilgamesh slept in the mountain fastness, but he did not dream. And so he did awake in anger and perceived a pride of lions before him, rejoicing in life. Gilgamesh took the battle-axe in his hand. He drew his sword from its scabbard. He fell upon the lions like an arrow shot from a bow. Gilgamesh smote the lions, slew them and scattered them. And then did Gilgamesh exult in the slaughter of the beasts. Gilgamesh clad himself in the pelts of the lions. Gilgamesh ate the flesh of the lions."
