Personal memory by Kathleen James-Chakraborty

As a child in the 1960s I spent most of my summers on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, but we sometimes escaped the heat by going to New Hampshire, where my mother's family had property. In both places, we entertained ourselves on summer evenings catching fireflies. Sometimes there were so many that we would put them in a Mason jar for an hour or two, using it to light our way. I haven't been able to do this with my son, who is now sixteen and probably too old to get the delight out of it that I did when I was younger than that.
