The Panamanian golden frog may have been extinct in the wild since 2007 due to chytridiomycosis. The Amphibian Recovery Conservation Coalition, started in 2004, brought the endangered amphibians to the US to coax captive-bred Panamanian golden frogs into producing offspring. In 2005, the Houston Zoo established the El Valle Amphibian Conservation Center (EVACC) in Panama, for the endangered frogs to have protected facilities in their native country.
