Personal memory by Wendy Welch
Two beautiful mature dogwood trees outside the apartment where I lived in on View Street in Victoria BC. Whenever I would wait for somebody to pick me up I would sit under these trees admiring their robust blossoms. The Dogwood tree has large cream coloured flowers when they are in full bloom and they sometimes flower twice a year (spring and fall). The other day I went by this place to see that both of these trees have been cut down. No doubt the manager of the building found the dead blossoms on the ground too tedious to clean up. Pacific dogwood has been British Columbia’s floral emblem since 1956 and was at one time protected by provincial law, that law was repealed in 2002.
