Sacramento: City Of Trees

Personal memory by William Hoover

2018Sacramento, CA, USA

During the gold rush era of 1848 - 1859, Sacramento CA, began to plant thick tree canopies around the city to offset the harsh landscape of the valley to the sun. This overtime has grown more and more, until the editor of the Sacramento Bee, the local newspaper, C.K. McClatchy created a slogan for the City "City of Trees" which was prominent on the Sacramento water tower for near 100 years until it was replaced by the new slogan "Farm to Fork Capital" which is also very true. However, Sacramento, CA has been ranked #1 by MIT and other prestigious universities for having the thickest tree canopies in any city beating out Boston, Seattle, Paris, and Amsterdam amongst others. For most native Sacramentians Sacramento will forever be The "City of Trees."
