Personal memory by Elisa Castro
2000 • Chiapas, Mexico
50% of the planet's species are located in tropical rainforests, all though they only occupy 7% of its territory. These rainforests have been profoundly transformed by human action. 70% of global deforestation occurs in these ecosystems. The Lacandona rainforest in Chiapas represents 50% of the remaining rainforests in Mexico. Originally it occupied 1.8 million hectares but in the last four decades it has been reduced to less than a quarter due to human settlement, agricultural activities and illegal logging. This process has threatened the existence of many species of flora and fauna such as the scarlet macaw, the jaguar, the tapir, among others.
