Bat Decline

Personal memory by Ned Warner

1965Belgrade, ME, USA

When I was I boy spending summers in Belgrade in the 1960's, I would always see bats flying over the railroad tracks, at dusk, swerving and diving to catch dinner. There were rocks available that I would inevitably throw at them, not so much to hit them but to watch them artfully dodge in avoidance. I never tired of the ritual, marveling at their radar and maneuverability, fascinated by their agility. They have been decimated in the Northeast by white-nose disease and are greatly missed. I see one or two a summer now.
