Rodrigues is a small volcanic island located in the Indian Ocean, east of Mauritius. Known for its unique and diverse ecology, Rodrigues features a variety of endemic plant and animal species, with lush landscapes, coral reefs, and coastal ecosystems contributing to its ecological richness. Rodrigues has witnessed significant animal extinctions primarily due to human activities and introduced species. The most notable example is the Rodrigues solitaire, a flightless bird, which became extinct in the 18th century due to hunting and habitat destruction. Additionally, the introduction of non-native species like rats and goats has further contributed to the decline of native fauna on the island.
