Where Have All The Butterflies Gone?

Personal memory by Nell P

When I was a young girl, my grandfather had a large garden, a big portion of which was dedicated to flowers. The garden was always filled with bees and butterflies. This was only 30 miles from where I live now. When I bought my first house, one of the first things I wanted to do was plant a butterfly garden. It took about 7 years for the butterflies to be regulars - it was always an event when my husband and I spotted a butterfly in the garden. "Look! A butterfly!" It is better than when we first planted it in the 1990s, but the number of visitors is nothing like it was in the 1970s in my grandfather's garden. Also, my husband has a memory of seeing a butterfly bush literally covered with butterflies when he was a kid - you don't see that anymore. :(
