1 in four glasses of water drunk in Amman, Jordan come from the wetlands. 1940 the Azraq reserve supplied 3 million cubic meters of water 1965 4 million cubic meters of water 1980 15 million cubic meters of water 1991 37 million cubic meters of water 2010 40-50 million cubic meters of water There are more than 1,000 illegal wells in the area. The birds count in 1967 was 347,000. In 2000 it was 1200 birds. The wetlands that used to be a thriving ecological hotspot have dwindled alarmingly to cover 0.04% of the area (Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature).
