I remember canoeing on the Wabash River in Lafayette, IN as a teenager 22 years ago. Now there are sewage drain off signs on the Heritage trails along the river warning of contamination. The water is no longer visually inviting, you have to close your eyes and listen to enjoy the sounds rather than the visual. There are also warnings against fishing due to contamination. The water treatment plant is right next to several sewage drains along the river. While cleanup is ongoing, it does not seem to be making enough headway...
