Untouched Rivers

1982 CE - 2022 CE

A 1982 survey from the National Rivers Inventory found that of the 3.2 million miles of streams in the contiguous United States only 2% remain “free flowing and relatively undeveloped and possessing outstanding natural and cultural values.” The Yellowstone river is our longest undammed river in the contiguous United States its protection secured by the creation of the world's first national park in 1872.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Reduce water use at home to ease demand on river systems and keep more water flowing naturally.

  • Support dam-removal and river-restoration efforts in the Pacific Northwest to help reconnect free-flowing river ecosystems.

  • Choose river-friendly recreation by staying on designated trails and minimizing impact along riverbanks.
