Every summer, footing turf in the family-owned bog was a misery. It was gruelling work which took up days of my summer holidays. I hated the work, but now I only have fond memories of those summer days. This is because Ireland has closed many peat bogs to fight against climate change. Furthermore, to protect the wildlife that lives in these bogs. The disappearance of turf as the main fuel source in Ireland grows year by year. However, as a result of the bogs closing we can safely hope that peat and bogs' native species will be preserved.
