Personal memory by Adriana Velazques-Ponton

Hurricane Maria had a strong effect on not only my island's people, but on it's plant and animal life as well. Because of it's decimating impact, our local birds (specifically the now endangered Puerto Rican Amazon) were cut in half in population. In the tropical forest of El Yunque, only two of 56 wild birds survived. Four of 31 survived in a forest in the western town of Maricao and 75 out of 134 in the Rio Abajo forest in the central mountains of Puerto Rico survived, scientists have said. It's really heart wrenching to witness our only native bird species drop dangerously in number because of this disaster.
