Personal memory by Kendall Flower

On Georgian Bay the wetland meadow in front of our home - for two weeks each late summer the purple swaths of Joe Pye flowers turned visibly orange with the annual influx of Monarch Butterflies, softly fanning their wings in the sunshine. Often four or more butterflies to each flower - walking down the boardwalk would send up a playful, living cloud of fluttering orange surrounding me for a moment before resettling to their busy pollination. Last year, in the summer of 2013 I counted six Monarch Butterflies in this wetland meadow throughout the season.
