"In 1896 Dr. Charles Andrews described the island's most common mammal: 'In every part I visited it occurred in swarms.' Dr. Andrews returned to Christmas Island in 1909 and found it little changed except for a few roads. But the Maclear's Rats were gone and so was the island's other rat."
