Personal memory by Rick Elinson
2013 • Hawaii, USA
There were 16 species of coqui frogs in Puerto Rico, of which two have become extinct in the last 30 years. Meanwhile the common coqui, Eleutherodactylus coqui, has invaded Hawaii with great success. The Hawaiians however hate the coqui and are trying to eradicate them. We should rethink our view of "invasive species", and instead honor them as "brave immigrants". The Hawaiians should be proud that they are serving as a sanctuary for the coqui.
