Personal memory by Frances Cress

As a child in the late 1950's - early 1960's, I recall spending countless hours capturing and running with fireflies in the open fields that were adjacent to our home in southern/central New Jersey. The early evening skies were ablaze with these 'Fairy" creatures. Their numbers were far too numerous to count and their presence was both uplifting and mystical. In the years since then, upon my return trips to NJ, I find that summer evenings skies are no longer filled with these lovely creatures. My own children have only experienced them once while visiting with friends in Wesptort, CT in the late 1990's.
