I was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii. I remember i used to go on camping trips out by Volcano National park when I was in middle school. We had to do a scavenger hunt where we had to identify the 'I'iwi, a type of Hawaiian honey creeper bird. At the time, this bird was abundant and filled the forest with its song. Now when I return to these camping grounds, these beautiful red birds are nowhere to be seen. I can only hear their faint calls echoing from the ohia trees.
