Personal memory by Gauri Divan

I have two memories from Goa India. Though I did not grow up there - we moved there almost 20 years ago to a place where nature still ruled the backyard. I clearly miss two things - one the fireflies of summer which were so numerous and fearless that I would catch them in a jar for our young son to examine and release - so they would light up the bushes in the garden. The second sadly is of a larger more gentle animal the fruit bat - every evening at sun down these bats which nested on an island opposite our home would set off across the darkening sky and the rustle of wings and the shadows in the sky would remind us that they were off for their dinners in local fruit trees.
