Connecticut Bats

Personal memory by Peter Ciccariello

Two years ago, here in Ashford, Connecticut we logged approximately 20 bats living in our barn and flying out every evening over the field. Last year we could only document 3, and found one dead later that summer. This year after an unseasonably warm winter and spring we were excited to spot 8 swooping down and circling, looking for insects. Three years ago the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection reported that 80 to 90 percent of the bats in Connecticut died after contracting what is known as White Nose Syndrome. We are hoping for a full recovery.
