When I was a child, there were regular air quality alerts and an orangey haze over the San Francisco Bay. Until the recent increase in wild fires, the air quality was much improved, thanks to the Clean Air Act and California's early mandating that cars registered in the state be equipped with catalytic converters and pass smog inspection.
