In an effort to preserve the wooded area behind the neighborhood I grew up in, the state government came in and planted a large collection of small pine trees. My father jokingly told anyone that asked about them that the whole neighborhood was starting a Christmas tree farm. Although over half couldn't survive the bitter cold of winter and the muddy mess of the next summer, I suppose it really was the thought that counts.
