Chinese White Dolphins

Personal memory by Michelle Pang

2013Hong Kong, China

In Hong Kong, we used to have a lot of Chinese white dolphins that lived around the South China Sea. I remember going on boat trips when I was younger and seeing a lot of Chinese White Dolphins. It was a particularly funny memory because I remember the confusion in my head when I found out that grown dolphins are pink and infant dolphins are grey (not white). However, as the government reclaimed more land around the area for the construction of the airport, the number of Chinese White Dolphins started to diminish. Recently, the government suggested an expansion plan for the Hong Kong International Airport to build a third landing lane for planes. Currently, we only have around 60 Chinese White Dolphins left in Hong Kong. Last year, when I brought a group of children in a summer camp out to the sea to see Chinese White Dolphins, we could hardly spot any of them. I still remember the disappointment on their faces. I really hope that the government will not destroy the dolphins’ habitat and that we can conserve the few dolphins that are left in the area.
