Personal memory by Olivia Teter

When I was a child playing freely in the hills of Sonoma County, California, we saw quail very frequently. Usually we would hear a rustle in the bushes near where we were walking, and then one quail would emerge, running and making beautiful cooing sounds, and then more would follow, sometimes obviously a family, sometimes a crowd. They were lovely and distinct, and seemed nervous to be disturbed, but were clearly in their natural setting. I can't remember the last time I saw quail in the hills near Healdsburg.
