I have heard about this from my family along with many other people I have known throughout the years in Front Royal. There used to be a synthetic fiber plant known as Avtex that used to be open in my town but was eventually torn down. During the time it was in use there were many problems caused. One of them being improper disposal of waste that the factory created. It ended up contaminating the Shenandoah river and poisoned the fish and surrounding wildlife. I was told that it was so bad to the point where the air would smell of fish and fumes. With how beautiful the area is I was actually quite surprised to hear this happened. After 1989 the plant was destroyed and the environment is currently being treated. As of now, the area is much cleaner but people who fish from the Shenandoah have to be careful with how much fish they eat due to the amounts of mercury that can still be found in the aquatic life.
