Personal memory by Henry Lawrence
1971 • Kailua-Kona, HI, USA
In the summer of 1971 I saw an 'Alala (Hawaiian crow) in the forests on Hualalai mountain. I was hiking with some friends to the top of the mountain and halfway up an 'alala croaked softly above us from a nearby tree. It followed us for about ten minutes as we hiked on, then flew away. Now 'alala are no longer found in the wild. They are extremely endangered and only exist at a captive breeding facility. I have always been glad that it spoke to us that day.
